Memorable experience

You MUST visit the starter at Elie before teeing off so you can look through the periscope, from an old submarine. The opening drive is blind over the hill, so the periscope is for seeing whether the group ahead is out of range. Eccentric detail that brings smiles. Really old-fashioned club, so remember all the etiquette. Some fantastically beautiful holes by the sea. The only reason this course isn’t as famous as other Fife courses, is that the Golf House Club doesn’t really care about marketing.
Braid's Home
11.05.2016
The course is just around the corner from Earlsferry, which is where five-time Open champion James Braid lived. Around these parts his name is whispered in reverential tones and much is made of the historical connections with him. The Elie course is proud that the 13th hole, which nestles beneath the towering cliffs of Kincraig Point, was declared by Braid to be "the finest hole in all golf." There are no par fives and only two par threes on this quirky course. Another curious feature is the periscope that protrudes high into the sky above the starter's hut. Salvaged from HMS Excalibur, it is ostensibly there to enable the starter to ensure that players are safely out of range before allowing the next match to proceed. However, with its considerable magnification an impressive range it can reach various corners of the course and spot behaviour of which Mr Braid certainly wouldn't approve.

Starterhaus mit Periskop
13.05.2018
