Open for play since 1894, the course has hosted 19 Irish Opens, a Walker Cup, Canada Cup (World Cup) and numerous Irish Amateurs. Located on its own sandy peninsula, this natural links also boasts vies of Ireland's Eye Island while it also poses notoriously fast greens. A great course that very much lives up to the hype.

The tradition and history can be felt upn setting foot on property. The big white clubhouse sits majestically next to the shore. The Yellow course is highly underrated. Some of the most scenic tee shots await players on holes 4,6,7. Altough the yellow are considered new holes they were built in 1971 and fit perfectly into the routing of the Championship course. The Championship course start of with one of the greatest tee shots along the shore. With all 18 holes playing in all directions you never get the same wind. The Par 3s are one of a kind and test all skill levels. The finishing stretch 15-18 is a great end to a fantastic day on a historic course and site.

Wer Geschichte erleben möchte ist hier genau richtig. Denn der 1894 gegründete Kurs von Portmarnock hat unzählige bedeutende Turniere zu Gast gehabt und ist voller Atmosphäre. Der Kurs ist anspruchsvoll, aber fair. Man sieht die meisten Gefahren. Gute Schläge werden belohnt, schwache verhindern einen soliden Score. Richtig spaßig wird es vom Tee. Die zahlreichen (Pott-)Bunker warten wie kleine Mäuler auf umherirrende Bälle. Auch der gelbe Ginster ist lieber von der Ferne zu genießen. Denn obwohl wirklich hübsch anzusehen sind seine Stacheln nicht gerade angenehm. Kurzum: Ein sauberes Course Management ist von Nöten, um in Portmarnock zu bestehen. Erstklassig sind die Schlusslöcher: Die 16 ist ein mit zwei Schlägen erreichbares Par 5 und einem extrem schweren, weil abwärts hängenden Grün. Danach folgt ein maximal 430 Meter langes Par 4 mit bestens verteidigtem Grün. Auf der 18 fegt einem der Wind noch einmal von der Seite aus an und fordert einen strammen Schlag auf das erhöhte Plateau-Grün.
