Perhaps the toughest section of Lewes Golf Club is the steep and narrow road up from the town that takes you to the clubhouse perched precariously on top of a chalk cliff. When the course first opened in 1896, young lads would lurk around the foot of the hill and offer to caddy for gentlemen serving by train at the nearby station. Not having to shlep clubs up the hill made the offer extremely attractive. Then as now the effort of ascending is richly rewarded with dramatic and spectacular views. Without water to worry about and only a modest scattering of in imposing bunkers, you might mistakenly imagine you're in for an easy round, but there's ann invisible hazard in the near constant wind that can transform the most modest par three into a formidable challenge.
