America's Best Seaside Course

Most of us will never play Cypress Point but I had a chance to do just that on a clear, cold January Day in 2012. Everyone knows about the dramatic three-hole stretch along the rocky Pacific coast: The short and spectacular par 3 15th, stout, all-over-crashing-surf par 3 16th and the incredible par 4 17th. They are Alister MacKenzie's crowning design glory. But the front nine is equally dramatic in rhythm and dramatic build-up, with back-to-back par 5s (holes 4-5) and one of the world's best short par 4s (hole 9). The scintillating hike back toward the ocean begins at 12 but in truth, the unique magic of this corner of the Monterey Peninsula, with its tall dunes, swaying pines and heart-rending history, never leaves you.
